Web and IoT - Glasgow

IT
Ref: 125 Date Posted: Monday 19 Nov 2018

Our client was recently described as: “the most exciting young creative agency in Scotland, if not the UK”.

In the short time they've been around they have won clients like Tennent’s, Magners, Channel 4 and most recently the world’s biggest arts festival - The Edinburgh Fringe (their 6th pitch win in a row). They have also picked up Scotland’s most coveted digital marketing award 3 times in the past 4 years.

They are disruptive, innovative and are growing fast.

This is an outstanding opportunity to join their world class team, to grow with them and to shape your working life in a way that just isn’t possible in most corporate cultures.

Their production team consists of around ten folk – an interesting mix of designers, animators, developers and electronics engineers. Within this team, your time will be split between two distinct types of work: building web sites and special projects.

On the web side of things, which equates to around 70% of their work, you’ll be working on some of the UK’s leading consumer brands including Tennent’s Lager, Magners, Bowmore and Jura. The sites they work on are typically bespoke builds using Wordpress, Craft, Drupal or Symfony in the back end.

On the special projects side they have incredible variety – everything from developing VR apps to building physical arcade machines. Here they use a wide variety of technologies including React Native, Python, OpenCV and Arduino. A few recent examples of things they have built:

  • A fun pub game for Belgian beer brand Heverlee, taking a traditional shuffleboard game and bringing it into the 21st century with digital technology.
  • A set of bespoke, retro-inspired video games for Tennent’s Lager, all developed using HTML5. And the arcade machines to put them in.
  • A mind reading holiday recommendation machine, driven by a cutting-edge EEG brainwave-sensing headset and our custom code.

Most likely, you’ll come from a PHP web design and development background. Up-to-date skills and solid commercial experience in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP and MySQL is essential for this role. In addition, they expect the successful candidate will have some experience of version control systems, React, Apache configuration and the Linux command line.

A curious mind and willingness to learn new skills is vital – although you may not have these skills right now, you’ll probably need to learn some Python, React Native and HTML5 game development on the job. You’ll also need to work with some physical computing platforms like Arduino and Raspberry Pi and gain a rudimentary understanding of basic circuits and IO.

Everyone at our client gets half a day every week to spend on personal ideas and projects, but further time is available to learn new skills as and when they’re required for a specific project.

They offer an attractive benefits package, a common sense and flexible(ish) approach to working hours and home-working and a great location (in the heart of Glasgow’s Finnieston). But most of all, a brilliant team of colleagues who’ll have your back, make you laugh daily, and help you produce work that you are immensely proud of.
